1902 Altona school shooting
Commited by Heinrich Toews; a teacher.
Case Synopsis
One of the earliest recorded school shootings in Canada occurred on October 9, 1902, at a one-room Mennonite school in Old Altona, Manitoba. The school's teacher, Heinrich Toews, first shot three school trustees during a meeting, wounding all of them. He then returned to the classroom and shot three young students—Annie Kehler (age 8), Helena Kehler, and Susana Rempel (both aged 10)—all daughters of the trustees. Annie Kehler died from her injuries; the other two girls were seriously wounded but survived. Toews then attempted suicide along railroad tracks nearby; he survived for several months before succumbing to his self-inflicted wound in January 1903.
