Caleb Lawrence McGillvary

Kai the hitchhiker.

Caleb Lawrence McGillvary—born September 3, 1988, in Edmonton, Alberta—became world-famous in February 2013 after a Fox news interview showed him using a hatchet to stop a violent attacker in Fresno, California, repeatedly describing the blows as “Smash, smash, SUH‑MASH!”. That interview went viral, framing him as an unlikely folk hero. However, his story took a darker turn when, in May 2013, he was arrested for the murder of 73‑year‑old New Jersey attorney Joseph Galfy. McGillvary claimed self-defense, alleging the victim had drugged and sexually assaulted him. Prosecutors argued the attack was premeditated and pointed to forensic, cell phone, and surveillance data. In April 2019, a jury convicted him of first-degree murder; he was sentenced to 57 years in prison with parole eligibility arriving around October 2061
