On June 25, 1950, after months of growing tension, the Korean War, often called Canada’s forgotten war, began when North Korean forces invaded South Korea. Members of the newly formed United Nations, including Canada, moved quickly to defend the South from communist aggression. Canada provided the third largest contingent of troops among UN nations, with more than 26,000 Canadians serving on land, at sea, and in the air.
