Harley Lawrence

The killing of a kind-hearted, unique presence.

Harley Lawrence was a 62-year-old homeless man in Berwick, Nova Scotia, who was brutally murdered on the night of October 23, 2013. He was sleeping in a public bus shelter when two men—Daniel Wayne Surette and Kyle David James Fredericks—doused him with gasoline and set him on fire, resulting in his death from thermal and inhalation injuries. Following an undercover Mr. Big operation, both pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in February 2015, and in April of that year were each sentenced to life in prison—Surette with no parole eligibility for 20 years and Fredericks with parole eligibility after 18 years. The heinous crime shocked the small Annapolis Valley community and became a tragic reminder of the vulnerability of those experiencing homelessness.
