Hope Slide

A mountain landslide.

The Hope Slide is one of the largest recorded landslides in Canadian history, occurring on January 9, 1965, near Hope, British Columbia. Triggered by a combination of geological instability and seismic activity, approximately 47 million cubic meters of rock and debris collapsed down Johnson Peak, burying a portion of Highway 3 and killing four people. The slide altered the landscape dramatically, creating a stark scar on the mountainside that remains visible today. It stands as a somber reminder of the region’s geological volatility and the power of natural forces.
