Synopsis

In December 2013, three members of the Klaus family—Gordon (61), Sandra (62), and Monica (40)—were murdered in their rural farmhouse near Castor, Alberta. The house was set ablaze, and only the remains of Gordon and Monica were recovered; Sandra’s body was never found, believed to have been consumed by fire. Investigators later uncovered that Jason Klaus (son of the victims) conspired with Joshua Frank: Frank entered the home on the night of December 8, 2013, and shot all three family members with a 9 mm pistol, while Klaus then doused the house with aviation fuel and ignited it to hide the crime—but not before shooting and killing the family dog. Both men were arrested following an undercover “Mr. Big” sting operation in which they confessed to the crimes. In January 2018 they were convicted on three counts of first-degree murder and originally sentenced to life imprisonment with parole eligibility in 25 years. Subsequent appeals led to shifting decisions on whether their parole eligibility periods would run concurrently (25 years) or consecutively (50 years total). A Supreme Court ruling against consecutive parole limits ultimately restored their eligibility after 25 years.
