On a quiet summer afternoon in rural Wisconsin, the artistic sanctuary of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, known as Taliesin, became the scene of a massacre that shocked the nation. While Wright was away, a servant named Julian Carlton suddenly turned violent, attacking the residents with a hatchet before setting the house ablaze. Among the dead was Wright’s beloved partner, Mamah Borthwick, her two children, and several workers who had been sharing a simple midday meal. Survivors fled through windows and flames to escape the attack, carrying with them stories of terror and chaos. Carlton was captured shortly after but died in jail before he could stand trial. The tragedy left Taliesin scarred and Wright devastated, marking one of the darkest moments in American architectural history.
