Synopsis
Read case story
Leston Lawrence, a former Royal Canadian Mint employee in Ottawa, stole 22 gold “pucks” valued at roughly $165,000 between 2014 and 2015. He smuggled the small gold discs out of the mint by concealing them in his rectum, later selling them to a local gold dealer. His scheme unraveled after suspicious transactions and significant bank deposits drew attention. In 2017, Lawrence was convicted of theft, laundering proceeds of crime, and breach of trust, and was sentenced to 30 months in prison.
