Lyle and Marie McCann

An unwarranted killing.

Lyle and Marie McCann were a retired Canadian couple from St. Albert, Alberta, aged 78 and 77, who vanished on July 3, 2010, while traveling by motorhome toward Chilliwack, British Columbia, carrying their SUV behind them. Two days later, their burned-out motorhome was discovered near Edson, Alberta, and their towed SUV was found shortly after, with evidence including blood, DNA, and a damaged hat linked to the prime suspect, Travis Vader.

Vader—a man with a history of theft, drug offenses, and arson—was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in 2012. In 2016, he was found guilty of second-degree murder, but due to a legal technicality, the conviction was downgraded to manslaughter, for which he received a life sentence with parole eligibility after seven years. The bodies of Lyle and Marie McCann have never been recovered, and Vader has consistently denied involvement and refused to reveal their location.

In December 2024, his application for day parole was denied by the Parole Board of Canada—citing his refusal to accept responsibility and disclose the whereabouts of the remains as significant concerns
