Moncton Mountie Murders

Justin Christien Bourque's killing spree.

On June 4–6, 2014, Moncton, New Brunswick experienced one of Canada’s deadliest ambushes on police in recent history. A 24‑year‑old resident, Justin Bourque, armed with a semi‑automatic rifle and shotgun, opened fire on RCMP officers stationed in the city’s north end. He killed three Mounties—Constables Fabrice Gevaudan, Dave Ross, and Doug Larche—and wounded two others before triggering a 28‑hour manhunt and citywide lockdown. Bourque surrendered to police on June 6 and later pled guilty to three counts of first-degree murder and two of attempted murder; he was sentenced to life in prison with 75 years of parole ineligibility. The massacre remains a watershed moment in Canadian public safety history and spurred major reviews of RCMP training, equipment, and emergency response protocols, issuing dozens of lasting recommendations.
