Synopsis
The murders of Nathan O’Brien (5 years old), and his grandparents, Kathryn and Alvin Liknes, occurred in Calgary, Alberta on June 29, 2014. The family vanished from their home after an estate sale, triggering Canada’s longest‑ever Amber Alert, which remained active until the arrest of Douglas Garland in mid‑July. Although their bodies were never recovered, investigators presented extensive forensic evidence—including blood matching the victims inside the Likneses’ home, DNA on a hacksaw, meat hooks, and boots, and aerial photographs captured accidentally by a mapping plane showing three bodies lying outdoors on Garland’s rural property. Garland had a long-standing grudge against Alvin Liknes over a failed business and patent dispute. In January–February 2017, following a trial, a jury convicted him on three counts of first‑degree murder, and he was sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 75 years—effectively ensuring he will spend the rest of his life incarcerated
