Synopsis
Read case story
The North Hollywood Shootout was a bank robbery gone horribly wrong on February 28, 1997, in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles. Two heavily armed and body-armored robbers, Larry Eugene Phillips Jr. (aged 26, male) and Emil Mătăsăreanu (aged 30, male), exchanged fire with LAPD patrol officers and SWAT for about 44 minutes, in what became one of the largest shootouts in U.S. law‑enforcement history. In total, eighteen people were injured—twelve police officers and six civilians. The two robbers were the only fatalities: Phillips committed suicide, and Mătăsăreanu died from his wounds later. All injured persons survived, and no bystanders or officers were killed.
