On April 19, 2018, in the Amazonian village of Victoria Gracia, a man arrived on a motorcycle and approached the home of 81-year-old shaman Olivia Arévalo Lomas. Tensions flared when he claimed a debt was owed by her son. After a warning shot, she emerged, and amid chaos and shouting he fired two fatal shots, killing her in broad daylight. The suspect, Sebastian Paul Woodroffe, a Canadian residing in Peru with ties to the ayahuasca retreat community, fled only briefly before villagers captured him. In an act of extrajudicial violence, they lynched him, recording the assault and burying his body in a shallow grave. While Peruvian prosecutors later tied ballistic evidence to Woodroffe, his death by mob justice forestalled any formal legal process.
