SwissAir Flight 111 crashed on September 2, 1998, off the coast of Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, killing all 229 passengers and crew on board. The flight, traveling from New York to Geneva, suffered an in-flight fire caused by faulty wiring and flammable insulation material. Despite the crew’s attempt to divert to Halifax, the plane lost control and plunged into the Atlantic Ocean. The disaster led to one of the largest investigations in Canadian history and resulted in significant changes to aviation safety standards, particularly regarding aircraft materials and fire prevention systems.
