The Chambermaid Murders
The Chambermaid Murders
Case Synopsis
Over the span of just 22 months, three chambermaids working in hotels across southwestern Ontario were brutally murdered. Jane Wooley was found stabbed and beaten in her London apartment. Edith Authier met a similar fate in her Merlin home, while Belva Russell was killed in Chatham in the early hours of the morning. Police eventually charged Gerald Thomas Archer for Russell’s murder and later linked him to the earlier killings via DNA and a post-humous confession. The case exposed gaps in early investigative techniques and brought to light the terrifying vulnerability of women working alone in the hotel industry.
