The Mayerthorpe Tragedy
RCMP officers Anthony Gordon, Lionide “Leo” Johnston, Brock Myrol and Peter Schiemann slain.
Case Synopsis
Four Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers arrived at a rural property near Mayerthorpe, Alberta, to execute a search warrant targeting stolen vehicles and a marijuana grow-operation. The landowner, James Roszko, was known to police as a violent offender and firearm prohibition violator. As the officers entered the site, Roszko emerged from concealment and unleashed a barrage of automatic rifle fire that instantly killed all four officers. He then took his own life at the scene. The killings marked the single greatest loss of RCMP life in one day since 1958 and sent shockwaves through Canadian law enforcement, prompting a full inquiry into weapons policy, farm-raid protocols, and officer safety.
