The Thunderbird is a colossal bird whose wingbeats were said to summon storms and crack the heavens with thunder. Rooted in the oral traditions of many Indigenous nations, the Thunderbird is both protector and punisher, a spiritual force capable of bringing rain to nourish the earth or lightning to strike down the wicked. Sightings have persisted for centuries: enormous shadows gliding over mountains, claw marks carved into cliff faces, and feathers as long as canoe paddles found after tempests. To some, it is a metaphor for nature’s raw power; to others, it is a creature that still rides the storm fronts, watching, waiting, and reminding humankind of its smallness beneath the thunder’s roar.
